We will recruit 50 adult patients with stage IIIb-IV Chronic Kidney Disease (eGFR 15-45 mL/min/1.73 m2) with clonal hematopoiesis (CH) and 50 adult patients with stage IIIb-IV CKD without CH. All patients will undergo MRI scanning of the upper leg and lower back for assessment of fat in the bone marrow and we will compare the results between the two groups to see if CH is associated with greater bone marrow fat and chronic systemic inflammation.
CH is a common aging-associated biological state that predisposes to subsequent cardiovascular death, however, whether it plays a role in MCI, dementia and kidney disease progression is unknown and understanding this novel risk factor may uncover new ways to reduce the burden of cognitive and kidney function impairment
The study plans to enroll up to 100 people, age 55 -99 years, over the next 5 years. Other criteria for the study include: -a diagnosis of chronic kidney disease (CKD) -GFR 15 - 45 mL/min/1.73 m2 -no history of blood cell cancer, chemotherapy or radiation therapy within past 12 months, HIV, or immobility for more than 1 week in past six months. -no use of drugs that affect bone quality. -body mass index must be < 35 Kg/m2to participate.
