This study wants to learn if remotely measured activity behaviors (e.g., steps, sedentary time) are feasible in people with Functional Neurologic Disorder.
This study plans to learn more about remotely measured activity behavior in persons with Functional Neurologic Disorder. We are particularly interested in finding out more about the feasibility of using a wearable accelerometer to measure activity behavior and examine how these measurements differ from current clinical measures that are used to measure the severity of FND. We also want to explore the lived experience of people with FND using interviews to understand how the condition potentially influences activity behavior. We think that measuring activity behavior remotely will be feasible, there will be differences in activity behavior compared to clinical measurements of FND severity, and qualitative interviews will help explain the impact of FND on activity behavior. To better understand these findings, we will also include individuals without FND (healthy controls) for comparison. If you join the study and you have FND, you will be asked to participate in two visits (one in-person, one virtual). At the in-person visit, you will be asked to perform a series of assessments that are similar to what you might do in a physical therapy evaluation: standing up from a chair, walking, turning around, undergoing a standard neurologic examination, and filling out questionnaires related to your FND symptoms. You will also be asked to wear an activity monitoring device for 7 days after your first visit. This small device is attached to your thigh with a non-allergenic, water-proof wrap and TegaDerm patch and will measure your physical activity. At the second visit, which will be conducted virtually, you will be asked to answer a series of questions about your experience with FND, and how it potentially influences your activity behavior. If you have FND, you will be paid $50 for each of the two visits in the study (one in-person, one virtual), adding up to a total of $100 if you complete both study visits. If you do not have FND, you will be paid $50 for the single study visit.
You may be able to join this study if you have Functional Neurologic Disorder and are between the age of 18-65 years old. You may also be able to join this study if you are a healthy adult aged 18-65.
