This study wants to learn how cannabidiol (CBD) affects drinking in people who drink alcohol often. This study will look to see if CBD can help people drink less and if CBD can help reduce problems linked to alcohol use.
Many people drink alcohol often, and some find it hard to cut back or control their drinking. This study wants to learn if full-spectrum cannabidiol (CBD) may help reduce how much people drink and lower problems linked to alcohol use. Up to 200 people from your area will take part in this study. If you join, you will first come to CU Anschutz for a screening visit. This visit will last about 3 hours. At this visit, the study team will ask about your health and drinking habits. You will have a breath test, blood draw, urine test, and fill out questionnaires to see if you are a good fit. If you can join the study, you will be placed into 1 of 3 medication groups by chance, like flipping a coin. You will get either 200 mg per day of full-spectrum CBD that has a small amount of tetrahydrocannabidiol (THC), 200 mg per day of broad-spectrum CBD that has no THC, or 200 mg per day of hemp seed oil that has no CBD or THC. You will not know what group you are in, and neither will the study team. You will take the study medication every day for 8 weeks, answer daily surveys, and have weekly virtual check-ins with the study team. You will attend up to 5 in-person visits over about 13 weeks. These visits include the screening visit, a visit to get your medication, a midpoint visit, an experimental lab session that will take about 11 hours, and a final follow-up visit. At these in-person visits, you will have blood draws, breath tests, health checks, and fill out questionnaires. During the experimental lab session visit, alcohol will be given in a controlled setting, and your responses will be watched closely. A ride home after this visit will be arranged if needed. You will be paid a total of $822 for taking part in the study. If you leave the study early, you will be paid for the visits you complete.
You may be able to join this study if you are between 21 and 65 years old, drink alcohol regularly, and have used CBD or cannabis at least once in the past year. At your first visit, the study team will check to make sure you meet all requirements to join the study.
