This study wants to find out how cannabis affects driving in older adults. This study also wants to learn whether how older adults think and how often they use cannabis may affect driving after using cannabis.
Cannabis may affect driving ability, reaction time, and decision-making. This study wants to understand how cannabis may affect older adults who regularly use cannabis. What this study learns may help improve knowledge about cannabis use and driving safety in this age group.
If you join this study, you will have 2 or 3 in-person visits, depending on the study phase. At your first visit, the study team will check if you can take part. You will give a urine sample, a breath alcohol test, and take a vision test. You will also try a short driving simulator session to make sure you don’t feel sick from using the simulator. You will complete simple memory and thinking tests. You will answer questions about your health, driving, and cannabis use. You will also fill out a form at home about the medicines you may take. For later visits, you will be asked to not use cannabis for at least 12 hours before your visit. You will also need to avoid alcohol and other non-prescription drugs for at least 24 hours before your visit. For one later visit, you will bring your own cannabis product that you usually use. This may be a smoked, vaped, or edible product, depending on the study phase. The study will not provide cannabis. You must plan for a sober ride home. During this visit, you will give another urine sample and complete another breath alcohol test. The study team will check your blood pressure and heart rate and take several small blood samples. You will answer questions about how you feel. You will complete driving simulator sessions and do simple tests of reaction time, thinking, and memory. Some tests will be done before and after using cannabis. Audio and video will be recorded during the driving sessions. Depending on the study phase, you may have another visit where you don’t use cannabis but otherwise do all the same procedures.
The study will last about 4 to 29 days, depending on the study phase. The first visit will take about 2 and a half hours. Later visits will take about 3 hours. Some visits may last about 1 hour longer so the study team can check your blood pressure and heart rate are safe before you leave.
