In this study we want to learn how babies are affected when their mothers have a viral infection during pregnancy. To do this, we will collect blood samples from pregnant women who have viral infections (like COVID-19) and those who do not.
Infections like COVID-19 cause changes in the mother’s immune system. During pregnancy this can impact the baby, even if the baby doesn’t get infected with the virus. Understanding how immune-related signals and stress in the mother’s body passes from mother to baby can help us find ways to protect infants from long-term health problems.
If you join this study, you will come to two study visits during your pregnancy, one in the second trimester and one in the third trimester. At these visits we will use a needle in your arm to collect a few blood samples. We will also ask you questions about your health and pregnancy. Then, when you give birth, we will collect more blood samples from you and one from your baby. We will also take a small sample of your placenta after you give birth.
You will be in the study for about 6 months, from the start of 2nd trimester until your baby is born.
You may be able to join this study if you are at least 18 years old, pregnant, and plan to give birth at UCHealth. Women who have COVID-19 during pregnancy and women without any viral infections during pregnancy can both join this study. If you are interested, we will ask you a few more questions to make sure you qualify.
