This study plans to learn more about how environmental factors such as life experiences and everyday stress impact maternal physical and mental health during pregnancy and postpartum.
Participants will complete 7 study visits starting from 10-14 weeks gestation to 6 months postpartum. Their baby will participate in the last 3 visits. Screening Visit (10-14 weeks gestation): Complete an virtual interview with questions about demographics, physical and mental health, and major life events to confirm eligibility. Visit 1 and 3 (12-16 weeks gestation and 32-36 weeks gestation, respectively): Will complete surveys about current mental health and a hair and blood sample will be taken from the mother. Visit 2 (24-28 weeks gestation): Mothers will complete a 1-step glucose challenge test (GCT). Blood will be drawn before, 1-hr post, and 2-post drink. Will also complete mental health surveys and hair sample. Visit 4 and 5 (48hrs - 1 week postpartum; 3 months postpartum, respectively): Mother will complete surveys about mental health, blood draw, and hair sample. Infant will complete hair sample. Visit 6 (6 months postpartum): Mother will complete surveys about mental health, blood draw, and hair sample. Both infant and mother will complete Maternal Infant Separation Task (MIST) and saliva samples will be collected from both mother and infant immediately, after 30-minutes rest, and at 0-, 15-, 30-, and 45 minutes post-MIST.
Pregnant for the very first time with a single baby and between 10-14 weeks gestation Between the ages of 18-35 years old Willing to provide the study team with permission to communicate with primary obstetrics provider Inclusion Criteria: Primiparous female with a healthy singleton pregnancy, 18-35 years old, 10-15 weeks of gestation at the time of enrollment, Able to understand and speak English, but preference for Spanish is allowed, Willing to give study team permission to communicate with obstetrics provider Exclusion Criteria: Current serious unstable medical illness, Known diagnosis of gestational diabetes (Type 1 or 2), BMI >= 30 at first prenatal visit, Current/active psychiatric disorder (per MINI), Lifetime history of psychotic disorder (per MINI), Use of psychotropic medications 4 months prior to enrollment, SUD within a year of conception (excluding nicotine), Nicotine use within 4 weeks prior to enrollment, Receiving care and/or planning to deliver on at a clinic or hospital at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus
