This study wants to find out how helpful an 8-week program is for Spanish-speaking parents and their children ages 8 to 11 who have difficulties with planning, focus, and self-control.
Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) often have trouble with skills like planning, staying organized, and adjusting to changes. The Unstuck and On Target program has shown to help improve these skills in English-speaking families. This study wants to see how well this program works for Spanish-speaking families of children with ASD and/or ADHD.
If you agree to join the study, the first set of questions will help the research team decide if you qualify. You will then be asked to fill out 8-10 questionnaires about your background, your child’s autism/ADHD traits, their thinking skills, and your stress as a parent. Your child will also take part in 2-3 activities. Next, your child will be placed into one of two groups by chance, like flipping a coin. They will either join the Unstuck and On Target program right away or be put on a waitlist and start the program in 3-4 months. If your child starts right away, you and your child will take part in 8 weeks of sessions to learn and practice new skills. Your child will come to 90-minute in-person sessions once a week with other children. At the same time, you will attend 90-minute sessions with other parents. After you and your child finish the program, you will be asked to fill out the same questionnaires and activities again. If your child is placed on the waitlist, you will not be contacted again until the first group finishes the program. After that, you and your child will take part in the 8 weeks of child and parent sessions. One to two months after finishing the program, you will be asked to join a small group to talk about your experience. You will also be asked to fill out one of the questionnaires again.
The Unstuck and On Target program lasts 8 weeks. During this time, you and your child will come to 90-minute, in-person sessions once a week in Aurora, CO. You will also have a follow-up visit one to two months later.
You may be able to join the study if your child is between 8 and 11 years old with ASD or ADHD, and you mostly speak Spanish with them at home.
