This study wants to learn how age and sex affect how our blood vessels age and how exercise (both short-term and long-term) changes the body.
The purpose of this study is to learn about how exercise benefits the body, heart, and brain and how this is affected by age and sex. This study also wants to learn how individuals respond differently to cardio exercise.
You will first have a visit to see if you are eligible for the study. If you are eligible, you will be assigned to one of two groups. If you are placed in the first group, you will be assigned an exercise training program. People in the active exercise group will follow a 12-week exercise program at our lab. The exercise program will be three times a week for 60 minutes each session, for a total of 180 minutes per week. The exercise will be split between walking or running on the treadmill and cycling. How hard the exercise is will depend on each person’s peak heart rate, which will be measured during a test at the start. If you are in the second group, you will maintain the same lifestyle habits you currently have, from the beginning to the end of the study. Subjects do not get to choose which group they are in. You will have 8 in-person follow-up visits, and participation will last approximately 6 months. At these visits, you will be asked to fill out some questionnaires and have physical examinations, including a DXA scan, and will give blood samples.
The study will run until Spring of 2029. Your participation will last approximately 5-6 months.
You may be able to join if you are a man or woman aged 18 years or older who does not smoke and is willing to be randomized to an exercise or control group.
