Diagnosis-Specific IVR Treatment for Tinnitus and Misophonia

We are looking for children and teens ages 10-18 who have bothersome tinnitus (ringing or other sounds in the ears). This study will test a home-based virtual reality program that uses cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) strategies to help you learn ways to cope with tinnitus and support emotional well-being.


Why this Research Matters

Tinnitus is when you hear ringing or other sounds that do not come from an outside source. For some children and teens, tinnitus can be bothersome and may affect daily life and emotional well-being. Researchers at Children's Hospital Colorado have developed a virtual reality (VR) program that teaches you about tinnitus and uses strategies based on cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). This study will help researchers learn whether the VR program may help with tinnitus symptoms, anxiety, mood, and quality of life. If you join the study, you will participate for about 18 weeks. You will first complete a 6-week observation period, followed by 6 weeks using the VR program at home and then a 6-week follow-up period. During the study, you will wear an Oura Ring while you sleep at night, complete online questionnaires, and use a Meta Quest 2 VR headset at home during the VR portion of the study. VR sessions usually last about 10-15 minutes and are completed 5 days per week during the 6-week VR portion of the study. You will also have an in-person enrollment visit before beginning the study. Most study activities after enrollment can be completed from home.


Who can Participate

Child and Teen

You may be able to participate if you: - Are 10-18 years old - Have bothersome tinnitus (ringing or other sounds in your ears) - Can understand English and follow instructions for using the VR program - Do not have hearing loss - Do not have a history of seizures Additional criteria will be reviewed by the study team to determine if the study is a good fit for you.
