We want to see how easy and acceptable it is for adults participating in a weight loss program to also improve their sleep habits and see if this helps them get better results.
Some research shows that sleep can affect our weight, but most weight loss programs don’t include sleep health as a key component. We want to find out if adding a sleep program to our weight loss program is well accepted and helps people get better results.
If you want to join the study, you will come in for 2 to 3 visits to see if you qualify. At these visits, we will check your vital signs, weight, height, and body fat. You will get a physical exam, an ECG (a test that checks your heart), wear 2 different sleep trackers for 1 to 7 days, complete a 7-day sleep log, and have your blood taken to check that you are healthy enough to join the study. If you qualify and decide to join, you will take part in a 6-month weight loss program. The program includes group meetings that help you make changes to your eating, activity, and sleep habits. A registered dietitian will lead the meetings. For the first 3 months, the group will meet every week. Then, for the next 3 months, the group will meet every other week. During the program, you will work on eating fewer calories, being more active, and improving your sleep. You will have 6 more in-person visits, 2 before the program starts, 2 in the middle of the program, and 2 after it ends. At these visits, we will check your weight, blood pressure, body fat, and take a blood sample. You will also wear a monitor that tracks your physical activity and sleep three times during the study, each time for one week. For three days in a row, you will take pictures of everything you eat and drink and text them to the study team. You will also be asked to participate in one 90-minute focus group so that we can hear about your experience in the study.
You will have 7 to 8 in-person visits during the study. The study will last about 9 months.
We are looking for adults who have regular work schedules, are not taking weight loss medications, and have a BMI between 25 and 40. To join the study, you must live or work within 30 minutes of the Anschutz Health and Wellness Center. At your first visit, the research team will check to make sure you meet all requirements to join.
