How CBD Influences Cannabis Habits and Mental Function in Young Adult Cannabis Users

This study wants to find out how cannabidiol (CBD) may affect cannabis use, the effects of cannabis, mood, and thinking in people that use cannabis regularly.

Why this Research Matters

We still have a lot to learn about how CBD affects young adults who use cannabis regularly. This study could guide future research on CBD and cannabis use. If you join, you will complete four visits over about 12 weeks. Your first visit will be at CU Anschutz, where the study team will see if you are eligible. This visit will take about three hours. During this visit, you will complete several tests to see if it is safe for you to join the study. You will take an alcohol breathalyzer test, have a physical exam, and give urine and blood samples. If you are eligible and choose to take part, you will be placed by chance into one of two groups. You will take either CBD or placebo for eight weeks. CBD is an investigational drug. This means that it has not been approved by the FDA. A placebo looks like study drug but has no active medicine. Neither you nor the study team will know which group you are in. The other three visits will take place in a mobile research lab, which is a specially equipped van that comes to your home. These visits will be every four weeks. During these visits, you will answer questions about your health, and fill out surveys. The study team will collect blood and urine samples. You will also have a breathalyzer test. You may get up to $550 if you complete all study visits. The study medication is provided at no cost, and you do not need insurance.

Who can Participate

Adult

You may be able to join if you are 18 to 25 years old, use cannabis regularly, and are not currently trying to cut down or stop using cannabis. The study team will review other requirements with you to see if the study is a good fit.
