A Study Looking at How Creams or Balms with Cannabis Help People with Long-term Muscle and Joint Pain

This study is trying to find out if using cannabis (marijuana) creams, lotions, balms, or salves on the skin can help people with long-term joint pain. It also is testing to see if any of the cannabis gets into the blood after using these products.

Why this Research Matters

As the opioid crisis continues to grow, more people are becoming interested in using cannabis instead of opioids to treat pain. Early studies show that cannabis creams and lotions might help reduce joint pain in the area where they are used. These products may also cause fewer side effects and may not affect thinking or movement like other ways of using cannabis.

What to Expect

Up to 77 people from the Denver area will join this study. If you take part, you’ll start with a video call (Virtual Baseline Visit). Then, a mobile lab will come to your home for 3 or 4 in-person visits over the first 2 weeks. About 6 weeks later, you’ll have one last visit by phone or video call. You’ll choose a cannabis (marijuana) cream, lotion, or salve to use for your joint pain. You can pick one with THC, CBD, or a mix of both. You can decide how often you would like to use it. At each visit, you’ll answer questions about your pain, mood, sleep, and how the product is working. You’ll also do short tests for memory, thinking, and movement. We will take a small blood sample at each in-person visit to check for cannabis in your blood. You’ll use a phone app (or paper diary) to track when and how much of the product you use, along with any side effects or other pain meds you take. The final virtual visit will ask how long you used the product, how well it worked, and if you had any side effects.

Study Duration

The study will last about 8 weeks. You will have 4 in-person visits during the first 2 weeks. At each visit, we will check your health and ask about your joint pain. Then, about 6 weeks later, you will have one final visit online to follow up.
