The Nephrotic Syndrome Study Network (NEPTUNE)

We want to learn more about the diseases that cause nephrotic syndrome. This is a group of symptoms that happen when the kidneys don't work the right way. We will collect health information and lab samples to help us discover new things. We hope this will help doctors, researchers, and the public.

Why this Research Matters

If you are interested, the study team will first meet with you to explain everything and see if you qualify. This is called the Screening Visit and takes about 20 to 30 minutes. If you join, you will have visits every 4 months during the first year. One of these visits will be by phone. In years 2 and 3, you will have one in-person visit each year, plus a few phone check-ins At the visits, we will collect health information, ask about your medical history, and do a short physical exam. At in-person visits, we may take small amounts of blood and urine. How much blood we take depends on your age and weight. We will try to collect urine each time. If your doctor decides you need a kidney biopsy for your care, we may ask for one extra small sample for research. This will only happen if it won't change your treatment. If you say yes, we may also use a small blood sample to make special stem cells for research. You can choose whether or not to do this. Your choice will not affect your medical care. You will get $100 for your first visit. If you agree to get text messages from the study, you'll get $15 each month for that. You'll get $100 for each in-person follow-up visit where we collect blood and urine, and $25 for each phone visit. If you leave the study early, you'll be paid for the visits you have already completed. We will mail the payments to your home as a check.

Who can Participate

Adult

You or your child may be able to join this study if you are under 80 years old and have been diagnosed with certain kidney diseases. These include FSGS (Focal Segmental Glomerulosclerosis), MCD (Minimal Change Disease), or MN (Membranous Nephropathy). Your child may also be able to join if they have nephrotic syndrome, even if they have not had a kidney biopsy. You cannot join the study if you have end-stage kidney disease, have had a solid organ or bone marrow transplant, or have a different kidney disease such as Nail Patella Syndrome.
