Comparing Mental Health Treatments for Teens with Substance Use Disorder and PTSD

In this study, we want to compare two methods for treating teens who have substance use disorder (SUD) and symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). We want to see if Risk Reduction Through Family Therapy (RRFT) or Encompass Treatment is more helpful for treating teens with these mental health problems.

Why this Research Matters

There are two groups in this study so that we can compare how well the two treatments work. Group 1 will take part in RRFT, which is a mix of individual and family therapy sessions. Group 2 will take part in Encompass Treatment, which is mainly individual therapy sessions. You will be randomly assigned to one of the groups, like flipping a coin. No matter which group you join, there is an option for your parent(s) or guardian to join some sessions. You can still be in the study even if your parent/guardian doesn't join. If you join this study, you will have 20 therapy sessions and 4 study visits across 1 year. At the study visits, you will be asked to give a urine sample. We will also ask you to fill out surveys about your health and home life. You will be paid up to $250 if you complete all parts of the study. Your parent/guardian will also be paid if they join the study.

Who can Participate

All Ages

You/your teen may be able to join this study if you are between 13 and 19 years old and have experienced a traumatic event in your lifetime. You must also have used a substance like alcohol or marijuana in the past month. You need to live in the state of Colorado to join this study.
