Intermuscular adipose tissue (IMAT) - protagonist in sarcopenia and insulin resistance in humans

This study plans to learn more about how different adipose tissues are related to diabetes and muscle mass and strength, as well as how to non-invasively track liver disease in those undergoing elective abdominal surgeries.


Why this Research Matters

Participants will be asked to complete a screening visit prior to their procedure which will include a fasted OGTT, DEXA scan, muscle strength testing, and MRI of the abdomen and thigh. During surgery, the research team will perform a muscle biopsy of the vastus lateralis, and the surgeon will take biopsies of the liver, abdominal muscle, and abdominal fat.


Who can Participate

Adult

Must be scheduled for a qualifying elective abdominal surgery performed by a collaborating surgeon. BMI < 50 Not using tobacco or marijuana products frequently May not be taking a number of medications including HRT, systemic steroids, or insulin Women: pre or post menopause, have not been pregnant or breastfeeding within the last 6 months
