The Effectiveness of Parent Management Training to Treat Irritability in Children
Primary Objective
Our goal is to determine if 12 sessions of Parent Management Training can reduce anger outbursts and irritable moods in children aged 10-14.
Description
If you decide to join this study, you will take part in 12 sessions of Parent Management Training with a licensed mental health professional. You will learn ways to help your child with their anger outbursts and irritable moods. Our study team will meet with your child before, during and after treatment to check their progress. You and your child will need to attend two in-person meetings at the Children's Hospital Colorado in Aurora for this study. The other meetings can be online or in person.
Main Procedures Involved: At the beginning of this study, you and your child will meet with with the study team twice to answer questions and fill out forms. Next, you as the parent will meet with a mental health professional to start the 12 sessions of parent management training. In the middle of training you and your child will check in with a study team member to see how your child is doing. At the end of training, you and your child will meet with the study team one more time to see if there was any decrease in your child's irritable mood or anger outbursts.
Duration of Participation: This study has weekly sessions for four months for a total of up to 20 hours. This study has four evaluation visits that are two hours each. Two of these visits are at the beginning of the study, one is in the middle and one is at the end, for a total of 8 hours. The Parent Management Sessions will be weekly for 12 weeks. Each session is 30-60 minutes for a total of up to 12 hours.
