Short-Term Effects of Equol (Soy metabolite) Supplementation on Blood Vessel Function in Postmenopausal Women with and without Chronic Kidney Disease

Primary Objective

This study is looking at the short-term effect of equol supplementation (1, 2, and 3 hours after ingestion) on blood vessel function in women with and without chronic kidney disease. Equol is a dietary supplement. Equol is a metabolite of soy that is produced by the gut microbiome.

Description

Main Procedures Involved: Study visits will include a blood draw and non-invasive testing of blood vessel function. As a volunteer, you will receive blood lipids screening, blood pressure screening, resting ECG, and physical examination.

Duration of Participation: One screening visit (1.5 hours) and two testing visits (each 5.5 hours). All visits will take place at CU Anschutz.

Eligibility
We are looking for postmenopausal women (aged 50-69 years) that are generally healthy and free from hypertension OR have chronic kidney disease, that are non-smokers and free from advanced CKD requiring chronic dialysis.
