Understanding How Sleep Health Affects Recovery from Adolescent Concussion
Primary Objective
This study plans to learn more about how sleep impacts recovery after a concussion. Specifically, we hope to learn more about what aspects of sleep are impacting symptoms post-concussion compared to healthy controls. Aim 1: Examine subjective and objective sleep health measures longitudinally post-concussion, relative to uninjured controls. Aim 2: Evaluate the relationship between post-concussion sleep health with Persistent Post Concussion Symptoms (PPCS) and symptom severity.
Description
We will conduct a prospective cohort study, with two groups (concussed and control). They will undergo an initial assessment (within 14 days of concussion) and a follow up ~28 days post-concussion. Controls will follow a similar timeline. During the ~two-week period between Visits 1 & 2, participants will wear an actigraphy device nightly to track sleep habits and complete daily surveys (Fig 4). On the night after Visit 1 and before Visit 2, they will also undergo an at-home measurement of sleep architecture.
