Let’s MOVE: Goal-setting exercise program in the Black community

Primary Objective

With our community partner, the Gyedi Project, we want to see how different levels of goal-setting exercises can encourage physical activity in the Black community. We also want to see how this program affects sticking to exercise and attitudes toward exercise.

Is This Study For You?

Let's Get Started!

Description

Everyone will get a personal exercise plan that lasts a month and matches their health needs. We will see how well people stick to the exercise plans and how they feel about their plans based on whether they exercise at moderate or vigorous intensities and set basic or challenging goals.

Main Procedures Involved: If you join this study, you will meet with our team 14 times at either the Aurora Center for Active Adults (ACAA) or Hiawatha Recreation Center (HRC). You can choose which location works best for you. At the first visit, we will check your vitals, ask about your exercise history, and you will do some short physical tasks. You will also do a short treadmill test to help us create a personal exercise plan for you. After this visit, you will come to ACAA or HRC three times per week for four weeks to do supervised exercises with a research team member. Each time, you will walk on a treadmill at a set incline and speed for about 30 minutes. We will check your heart rate and how hard you are working. You will also fill out surveys at some of these visits. At the last supervised exercise visit, you will set either a basic or challenging exercise goal for the next month. Then, you will exercise on your own in any way you choose. After this month is over, you will come back for your last study visit. You will fill out the same surveys and do some of the same physical activities you did at the first visit. You will also have a 30-minute interview to talk about your experience in the study.

Duration of Participation: About 2 months.
