Lotus Study: Research about bone health with progestin-only birth control pill, Slynd
Primary Objective
This is a study to see if the progestin-only birth control pill, Slynd, affects bone health.
Description
Slynd is an FDA-approved birth control that is 98% effective at preventing pregnancy when taken correctly.
Some birth control can affect bone mineral density (the amount of calcium and other minerals in your bones). Because of this, the company that makes Slynd, Exeltis, is researching the potential impact of Slynd on bone mineral density, especially in teenagers.
You can choose to either take Slynd or use non-hormonal birth control during the study, such as condoms, abstinence (not having sex), or a copper IUD.
Main Procedures Involved: If you decide to volunteer for this study, you will be asked to take a daily pill or chewable tablet or not take any hormonal birth control (control group), complete 2-5 DXA scans, and 3 blood draws. A DXA scan measures the strength of your bones, the muscle and fat in your body. The test result will show if you have normal bone density or if there may be any risk of breaking a bone or having a decreased bone mass (osteoporosis).
Duration of Participation: Approximately 5 in-person visits over 1-2 years
